Wednesday Night Series

Every Wednesday at 7pm something fun and educational.

Nov 5: Film Night: Join us as we screen the film What’s Cooking? truth about enzyte This movie explores what happens when families come together for Thanksgiving. In a series of overlapping stories that involve four families (one Hispanic, one Vietnamese, one African American, one Jewish) all preparing for Thanksgiving dinner, the film turns food into a witty and warm exploration of cultures.

Nov 12: Veterans Day Tribute: Join us in honoring the men and women who have served in the armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The program will begin with a history of Veterans Day, information about heroes returning home, and biographies of local soldiers who gave their lives. The program will end with a tribute to all the war-dead from these conflicts in California.

Nov 19: “Talkin’ Turkey”: Ever wonder why some people like oysters in their dressing and others like fruit? Or what the difference is between stuffing and dressing? Or how vegetarians celebrate “Turkey Day”? Join us for a fun filled evening as we explore the history and culture behind our favorite Thanksgiving food.

FOR CHILDREN

Children of all ages and their adults are invited to join children’s librarian Leslie Stanton three times a week for storytimes. Storytime is offered weekly on Tuesdays, Wed-nesdays, and Fridays. See calendar for details.

PAWS FOR READING

Children are invited to come to the library and read to a special friend—a canine one! Come practice reading skills to a great listener…for more information ask at the Children’s Desk. Every Tuesday at 4pm.

Every Wednesday at 7pm something fun and educational.

Oct 1: Film Night: Join us as we screen Manufactured Landscapes. Director Jennifer Baichwal follows photographer Edward Burtynsky through China as he shoots the effects of massive industrial revolution, creating stunning art from a civilization’s materials and debris.

Oct 8: Forum: Napa County Supervisor Diane Dillon will discuss the Measure P initiative on the November 4th ballot, which seeks to extend protection of the Ag Preserve by continuing to give residents the right to vote on zoning changes. Dillon will also answer questions about state issues affecting the county.

Oct 15: Author: Janet Fletcher will discuss her book Cheese & Wine: A Guide to Selecting, Pairing, & Enjoying, and will pair six domestic and international cheeses with three wines. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Oct 22: Author: In today’s world of genetically engineered patented plants, seeds are in peril. Claire Cummings will talk about her book Uncertain Peril: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Seeds, about GMOs, and how to save seeds. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Oct 29: Trivia Night: Join us for a hilarious evening of trivia and prizes around the topic of Hallo-ween. Come learn how many of our traditions surrounding this fun holiday got started and test what you already know!

Sept 10: Health Forum: What Happened to Tim Russert? Nia Lendaris, RN and Director of St. Helena Hospital’s Cardiovascular Service Line, will discuss what you can do to prevent what happened to Russert from happening to you.

Sept 17: On Nature: Master Gardeners present Preparing Your Garden for Winter. Come learn how to ready your garden for freezing and drying conditions that can tax even hardy plants. Protect your garden over the cold months and make spring cleanup easier.

Sept 24: Banned Books: Every year hundreds of books are objects of censorship attempts. The St. Helena Library invites you to spend an evening celebrating your right to read by reviewing historical and recent challenges and excepts from our favorite banned titles. Banned Books Week 2008 is Sept 27–Oct 4.
